KCHS Student it's your time to lead the kent county community forward

facilitated by Findlay House Global in collaboration with the Kent County Local Management Board and Kent County High School.

The Y.O.U.R. Kent County Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) engages KCHS students with the purpose of designing a youth-led Kent County community project that addresses students’ mind strength needs and the needs of their friends and peers. Students will develop valuable skills in the process, including critical thinking and while earning a monetary stipend and accumulating service learning hours.

Students will work with FHG’s certified workshop facilitators who provide critical information and guidance as students develop their community project concept. The final community project concept will be presented to the Community at the Academy’s Graduation, and the Kent County Local Management Board will provide available funding to implement the student-designed project in FY2024.

YLA puts KCHS students in the driver’s seat, while providing them with the guidance and monetary resources needed to make a tangible and lasting impact.

What Specific CHALLENGE Will We Be Tackling?

We know students continue facing increasing challenges in their day-to-day lives.

The questions we will be tackling together through this Leadership Academy program are—

“How do we begin to solve the problems Kent County students are facing on a day-to-day basis?

How do we decrease feelings of disconnectedness and increase mind strength?”

Session Topics:

  • “My Power” - I have the ability to create change.

  • My Story” - My personal story is unfolding and is affected by my family’s generational story and the history of Kent County

  • “My Mind = My Strength” - I can do difficult things. I have the ability to tackle challenges that don’t have clear solutions. The stronger my mind is, the more clearly I think, the better I feel, and the more creative I can be.

  • “My Community” - I can make an impact on my community, right now: by asking the right questions (research), creatively dreaming up solutions, and working with my friends and neighbors toward the same community goal (organizing).

  • “Our Project” - My individual commitment to our group project will make our Kent County community better.
